Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occuring silicate mineral that has been mined in many countries including Australia, Canada, Russia and South Africa.

Commercially there are three common types of asbestos, which originate from two mineral groups.

Amphibole mineral group:

Crocidolite (Blue asbestos)

Amosite (Brown asbestos)

Both banned in 1985.

Serpentine mineral group

Chrysotile (white asbestos)

Banned in 1999.

Clear Reports

Our reports are unique to our company. We have written our own software which enables us to tailor our reports to our clients' needs.

The reports are clear concise and jargon free. All incidences of asbestos containing materials have easy to follow references, and risk assessments are colour coded.

We even include 'look alike' materials to avoid confusion at a later date.

Working with asbestos

When working with asbestos materials, they are divided into three categories. The legislation is different for each category:

Licensed Materials.

Notifiable Non-licensed materials

Non Notifiable Non Licensed materials.

Do you know which is which?

Listed Buildings

We have considerable experience in conducting surveys in Listed Buildings where professional knowledge of building structures is required.

Surveys of listed buildings

Where renovation surveys are undertaken, advanced survey techniques are employed including the use of camera probes where more intrusive methods are not appropriate.

Our experience includes complex and varied sites ranging from an international airport large school sites and hospitals.

A short history lesson

"We have learned to depend in many, many ways upon these mineral fibres.  Fire does not burn them. Alkalis does not eat them.  Water does not destroy them.  Vermin do not attack them.  They do not decay, rot or corrode.  Surely asbestos which gives us so much protection and so much comfort in our daily lives is a magic mineral."

— From Asbestos: A Magic Mineral by Lilian Holmes Strack, 1941.

Every year in the UK 4,000 people die from asbestos-related diseases, more than the number killed on the roads each year.

By 2020 it's estimated that the substance will lead to the deaths of 10,000 people annually.
